Fun with Words | James’ Coffee Blog

I love to take notes of words. I write down words I hear that I think I could use in poetry and words that catch my eye. I sometimes take a note of a word after trying to think of how to express something and guessing what the right word may be.

For example, I recently wondered if there was a word that meant arranged according to a taxonomy. I thought taxonomic would fit. And it did! Part of me has wanted to make up a word, but perhaps of equal gratification is not knowing a word and fitting together what you know about a language to find the right one.

Interestingly, I am mostly unable to explain why I thought taxonomic was the right word. Intuition like this is fascinating.

It has been a while since I have written a Fun with Words post, in which I share several interesting words I have come across lately. The inspiration for this post was I realised that words from recent weeks have been building up. Then I thought “wait, I used to share these on my blog!” Thus, here I am with words to share.

Here are the words I have written in my notebook that have caught my eye recently:

  • Ennui: Boredom or dissatisfaction.
  • Bifurcated: Split into two.
  • Taxonomic: Related to classification.
  • Enfold: Cover, or hold someone in your arms.
  • Ebullience: Being lively.
  • Radii: The plural of radius.
