I have been thinking about how musical concepts apply to blogging recently. For example, could you make “playlists” of your content that are curated by theme or the mood of the posts? For example, could I have a list of “Monday morning pick-me-ups” with heartwarming stories I have written, or a list of “Web Wednesday” posts that are all about making things for the web.
The idea of curation is interesting to me. When I was showing my website to a few people this week at the Beyond Tellerrand conference, I noticed that many of the posts on my home page were technical.
While I write about many topics – from writing stories to sharing poems to writing technical blog posts – I often write about one topic more than another in a given time frame. I suspect this is because once I get in the mindset of writing a particular kind of work – for example, a poem – I want to explore that vein of creativity as far as I can before moving on to something else.
Perhaps I could have my chronological feed on my home page as well as some “playlists” from which the reader can choose. I think the difference between a playlist and a category archive page is that a playlist is specifically curated. Perhaps there could be some preamble to introduce the playlist.
What other concepts are there from music that could be applied to blogging, and in what ways can such concepts be applied?
